5 Best Scenic Roads in San Diego
Oct 15, 20261 min read
The five best scenic roads in San Diego are Sunset Cliffs Boulevard (dramatic clifftop ocean views in Point Loma), Historic Highway 101 (the classic coast road through Del Mar, Encinitas, and the beach towns), Silver Strand Boulevard (SR-75, the narrow strip between bay and ocean to Coronado), Mount Soledad & La Jolla Scenic Drive (panoramic coastal and city views), and the Sunrise Highway (S1, mountain vistas in the Laguna Mountains). Check current conditions before you go.
San Diego is a driver's paradise
With near-perfect weather and a coastline that rivals anywhere in the world, San Diego is made for driving. In a single day you can trace dramatic ocean cliffs, cruise through laid-back beach towns, cross a narrow sandbar between bay and sea, and climb into pine-covered mountains. The variety — and the famously good weather — make it one of the most rewarding driving regions in California. Whether you want crashing surf or quiet mountain switchbacks, San Diego has a road for it.
The 5 best scenic roads in San Diego
Five routes worth planning a day around:
- Sunset Cliffs Boulevard (Point Loma) — dramatic clifftop views over the Pacific, spectacular at sunset.
- Historic Highway 101 (Coast Highway) — the classic coastal cruise through Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas, and the north-county beach towns.
- Silver Strand Boulevard (SR-75) — a narrow ribbon of road between San Diego Bay and the ocean, leading to Coronado.
- Mount Soledad & La Jolla Scenic Drive — panoramic 360° views over the coast and city from La Jolla's heights.
- Sunrise Highway (S1, Laguna Mountains) — a mountain escape with sweeping desert-and-forest vistas, east of the city.
Coast, bay, cliffs, or mountains — each a different San Diego.
Coast or mountains?
San Diego lets you choose your scenery. For the ocean, Sunset Cliffs delivers raw, dramatic clifftop views, while Historic Highway 101 offers the relaxed, classic SoCal beach-town cruise. For something unique, Silver Strand threads a narrow strip of land with water on both sides en route to charming Coronado. And when you want a change from the coast, the Sunrise Highway climbs into the Laguna Mountains for pine forest, cooler air, and long views toward the desert. The official San Diego Tourism Authority site is great for planning, and California State Parks covers spots like Torrey Pines along the way.
The sunset that stops the car
Anyone who's driven Sunset Cliffs Boulevard at the right hour knows why it's named that. As the sun drops toward the Pacific, the sandstone cliffs glow gold and orange, surfers dot the water below, and drivers instinctively slow down — or pull over entirely — just to watch. It's one of those places where the drive becomes the destination. San Diego is full of these moments: the road delivers you somewhere beautiful, and then the view makes you forget you were going anywhere at all. That's the magic of driving here — the scenery keeps upstaging the plan.
Make the drive the highlight
San Diego's roads are beautiful in any car — but unforgettable in the right one. Taking Sunset Cliffs or Historic 101 with the top down, the ocean air rushing in and the coastline unfolding, turns a scenic drive into the highlight of a trip. The scenery is free; the car is what elevates it. Just check current road conditions before heading out, as coastal and mountain roads can close for weather, construction, or fire.

My goal is to ensure you don't waste your high-end rental sitting in downtown traffic, but instead know exactly where to point the steering wheel to perfectly pair your vehicle's performance with Southern California's most unforgettable sunset ocean views.
